If you have Wifi problems on your Wind/Advent, you should update your wireless drivers to the latest version provided here. It should solve problems such as disconnecting halfway, or being unable to connect to a wireless network.

This post was last updated on 26 September 2008 (version 5.9073.0917.2008).

WLAN Driver version 5.9064.0701.2008: Download from Mediafire.
WLAN Driver version 5.9066.0709.2008: Download from Mediafire.
WLAN Driver version 5.9067.0710.2008: Download from Mediafire.
WLAN Driver version 5.9071.0822.2008: Download from Mediafire (UI+Drivers), Mediafire (Drivers Only), or directly from MSI.
WLAN Driver version 5.9073.0918.2008: Download from Mediafire.

They should work with Wind and the Advent 4211, since they have the same wireless card (Realtek 8187SE). Do not use this for the Medion Akoya as it has a different wireless card! Do not use for the newer Winds with draft-n!

How to update your wireless drivers - a simple guide

Step 1: Open up the file with WinRAR.

Image

Step 2: Extract the folder 87SE-PCIE.

Step 3: Look for the file Setup.exe, and double-click it to start the driver installation!

When I was using my Advent last night I did experience a couple of dropouts. It may sound odd, but the dropouts became less frequent when I moved the Advent away from other wireless kit. Also, I noticed that the wireless channel of my Advent (set to channel 1 by default) was different to that of my router (set to channel 11). Since I have matched the two up (both on channel 11) I have not experienced anymore dropouts.

I just hope I haven't tempted fate!

Advent owner; so far its been connected to 2 AP's without any problems - throughput was not very good though.

Why do you need to match them? Shouldn't it automatically switch to match the channel of the AP that you are locked onto?

Another thing, maybe you guys can state how far away the router is as well. If your router is pretty far away, then we can't expect excellent wireless performance, can we? :D

I don't know much about wireless networking I'm afraid; I just guessed that if the two weren't automatically matched (as you suggest they should be), then it made sense for me to do it myself.

FYI, my router isn't too far away, I only live in a flat!

Looking at the MSI website, they have some drivers for the WLAN that seem newer than the ones on my Advent. I wonder whether they would help with the dropouts?

I was about to ask for the WLAN drivers for the Advent, to see which one is more updated :). I guess the MSI drivers should work, since it's still the same machine.

My Wind arrived today and I can't get the wifi to work. I've used the wifi button but it says there are no networks. I'm typing this on my old laptop via the wireless connection.

Any suggestions?

Wind arrived this morning, done the usual things, charge battery ,windows update, msi updates, downloaded firefox, thunderbird,Avast and iTunes, computers been on wifi for most of the day,no problems at all.

Went to network connections and scanned for available networks, nothing found at first then pressed FN + F11 a few times and it started working.

Wifi problems? You need to press the Fn key (bottom left) of the keyboard and the F11 key at the same time to toggle between wifi and bluetooth or both at the same time.

Failure to switch on the wifi will lead to a "no available network" message.

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for such "problems".

Did you catch what was updated via Windows Update?

Don't send it back, try booting to a live CD of Ubuntu. If those drivers work it's 100% sure that something is wrong with your windows drivers. I seriously doubt any Wind's are shipping with hardware wireless issues, chances are pretty good that it's just drivers installed improperly.

FYI, I will be writing a review on my Advent today, and I will include details on how I sorted the Wifi. May be worth just holding onto your machine for a tad longer, Wesbar?

Also, there are a couple of threads in the general discussion area that helped me, they may be worth a look.

Cheers Stuey. I look forward to that. Did you by any chance install the Realtek wireless utility instead of using the windows one? Thanks.

It was a realtek wireless nic update,
there are 2 hardware updates one for the wired nic and one for the wireless nic.
I have not seen any issue with the wifi after this

Also did the Bios 105 on the advent yesterday all good 8-)

I see. Looking more like a driver problem now, rather than a hardware one. No more disconnections while surfing halfway?

Fixed it. My Belkin router has 13 channels and the Wind has only 11. Although it was on auto it was actually using channel 13. Once I was on it worked fine albeit a bit slower than my laptop.
