apiltch, are you going to post some palpable figures on differences in performance when it comes to RAM?

I'm planning on getting the Linux version and adding 1GB of RAM myself, so I'm very much interested.

Yes, good to know  . Thanks apiltch.

I'm just glad that they did not go the same route as Asus (soldered in SSD). As long as there is a possibility to upgrade UMPCs, the SSD industry will have to produce better, more affordable, SSDs.

Netbooks: MSI Wind 9Cell 2GB BIOS 1.09
Broadcom/Dell DW1490 WiFi
Dual Booting XP and Win7 Beta
When are the manufacturers going to realize that just upgrading memory shouldn't be grounds for voiding a warranty? Now if you brick the thing or let the smoke out, that's another story. As long as you're not taking a soldering iron to the motherboard, they need to take a common sense approach. (Stepping down off of my soap box)

I think it's more a matter of opening the backpanel, which clearly isn't meant to be opened.

Anyway, I'm sticking with what I said before. If the unit works fine after the first month or two I'll start modding. If there is an issue with the unit, chances are high it has shown by then.

Just installed a bigger HD and stick of RAM
It was very easy and took all of 5min - no signs of me being there either
(except a missing sticker - but I will get another one of those)

No problems with the RAM or Drive being recognized either.

MSI cannot leagally ship the Wind with more than 1 GB of memory!

This would violate the OEM license agreement between MSI (and ASUS, Dell, HP, etc.,) and Micro$oft for the distribution of Win XP after July 1, 2008. To have XP Home there has to be 1 GB or less of memory and an 80 GB or less HD.

I thought there was a 10" or less display requirement so I don't know how Dell will get around this with their 12.1" E-Slim unless they have a different OEM agreement with M$.

Windows just updated the limits. I don't got a English source right now, but the new screen limit was about 15 inch with touchscreen allowed. The processor clock limit remained at 1Ghz, with exceptions for the Atom and similar CPU's. The memory limit also remains at 1Gb.

Typical Microshaft crap. Hamstring the XP machines to force everyone to go to an inferior OS in VISTA

Just went through this procedure in the last few days and got back the final bit today

Your upgrade has been recorded and authorized.
Your upgrade ref. no is: ********** *******
Please get back to us if the upgrade will be successful and the unit will be running fine.

Will they also send me a sticker to replace the one with a hole in it

Who did you contact to do the memory upgrade? MSI USA is telling me that I'll void my warranty if I upgrade the memory.

I contacted MSI UK
I Tried to Register at MSI.com but the product serial numbers are different, so wont let you.

I didn't take it further, as I think its better for me too upgrade and just put a replacement sticker on myself. If MSI have a record of me upgrading the HD/RAM and something else goes wrong with the machine, that is related to the HD/Ram but not caused by me, I could find the warranty refused.

If it wasn't meant to be opened, why are there screws to do so? If you mean wasn't meant to be opened by USERS, I could understand they may want to limit that. I am just a little wondering if the ship date got pushed passed July 1 so that the new MSFT limits on XP on netbooks could apply. (1GB RAM is one of them).

I'll probably end up with XP Pro anyway, AND 2 GB Ram.

Eh, yeah, I considered that obvious in the context. If the Wind was meant to be upgraded, it would have had a hatch of some kind, so users wouldn't get in contact with the chipset and all other electronics. The warranty sticker is as much a signal to ward of the inexperienced users who are more prone to break their system. Afterall, just placing your fingers on the wrong spot can cause trouble.

Didn't get Singapore a few Winds just before that date? Regardless, while I don't say it's impossible, I find it highly unlikely MS made MSI wait. If that would have been the case MSI should have known quite some time in advance and perhaps have moved in with it's Linux models before the Windows models.

Expected no less. :) Personally I'll give Vista a go, and 'mod' the Wind with 2Gb of ram and an SSD. After that I'll be looking into touch screen and stuff, so I don't think I should bother about contacting MSI for a replacement sticker after upgrading the ram :P

Ok, I sent the following off to MSI Canada

Quote:
Can I expand the memory on the system to two gigabytes without invalidating the warranty? How about changing the hard drive to a bigger device? Would the warranty still be valid or only on the components not related to a different hard drive?thanks

and received the following reply on their tech board (I have registered my wind with MSI).

Quote:
You can add the memory and it will not void the warranty. Also, you can change to the bigger capacity hard drive BUT the warranty will only cover the original hard drive. Thanks.

From the replies on the board here it appears as if it depends on where you live as to the answer that you get.

Perhaps speak with the distributer. I was planning to purchase one in Canada and went to a distributer in Toronto and asked about the modications of ram and HDD. Before he said anything, he pulled out a sheet which contained at least 25 VOID stickers LOL

He told me that MSI canada had authorized them to mod them and provided him with replacement sticker as the warranty is still valid if they basic mods are done.

Which software did you use to migrate Windows XP to the new drive? My new HD will be arriving in a few days and I would like advise ahead of time. Thanks.
