UPDATED Oct1 2008

How it's made: The Wind installer disc is built using an extensive script called Slipstream by Dense, an extremely talented programmer and great guy. I was able to use slipstream to insert all the latest kexts, hex strings, device ids, etc into the final product. As you all can see, it's really the easiest solution to make discs such as this. This is the same tool that others like Kalyway and Jas use. Just a real loud shout out to Dense for providing the tools needed to get this working and get it out there as quickly as we could. This wouldn't have happened without him. :)

THE WIND INSTALLER DISC CAN BE FOUND ON TPB!! "MSIWindosx86"

So the custom installer disc is finally here. This is the first release for the disc and consider it a beta as we wanted to get some feedback from the community. This is currently the easiest option to install Mac OS X Leopard on the MSI Wind notebook. Please take into consideration the installer was made with the MSI Wind notebook in mind and we're hoping that the other clone revisions of this notebook (Advent, Luvbook, Akoya) will work as well, even though some of the hardware is slightly different.

Before I list off some of the features, I'd like everyone to know that NOONE DRAWS A PAYCHECK FROM THESE EFFORTS. We created this disc to help the community and give people more options on their brand new MSI Wind notebook. If you really like the way this OS feels to you please consider purchasing OS X Leopard from http://www.apple.com.

Before someone starts complaining, be sure to read the OSx86 forums at http://www.insanelymac.com for some preliminary information about OSx86 and how it works before you start making a fool of yourself.

--------------

--Features--

-Single disc installation
-Native Graphics on boot of OS
-Keyboard and Trackpad Working
-Native Camera support for use with applications such as iChat, Photoboot & Skype
-Internal Speakers with Mute, Volume UP/DOWN functionality
-Bluetooth Works natively
-Clamshell Sleep
-System Sleep (Still to be determined)

So we understand what the features are of this thing. Now lets get down to business on what doesn't work. Because we all know that's what people love to complain about... :!:

--Features not yet implemented--

-About this Mac Screen - This is just cosmetic as it does not affect the functionality of the notebook

-Line in/out Mic - This is the biggest complaint from everyone. I am trying my hardest to source down the one man who can actually get this function to work. Until then, be glad you HAVE OS X Leopard running on your MSI Wind.

-Trackpad Scrolling - This could potentially be solved, but I have not delved deep enough into the process.

-Installer can potentially not show progress bar - As you can see in Onetrack's installation video some people have been noticing that the progress bar for the installation is not showing. This doesn't mean it's not installing as it's purely cosmetic.

Onetrack has done a great job of lending me a hand with testing the installation and he was kind enough to upload some videos to show people both the installation of this installer disc and also how to upgrade the RAM, WIFI and the HDD.

INSTALLATION OF THE CUSTOM INSTALLER DISC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TS7yFH_I3NI

INSTALLATION OF RAM, HDD AND WIFI CARD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir-aLtuVNps

Please watch those videos before attempting the installation so you throughly understand how to do this.

I want to give a shout out to Onetrack, Stoked4life, SME82 and everyone else who helped make this release happen so quickly.

This will be the first release with others to come afterward which will be more thoughtout and thorough.

Thanks everyone,

-Stell

I'd also like to know if Bonjour services are working with the ethernet.

sounds like a good idea to me. Still waiting for my Wind to arrive, so I can't provide any feedback...yet.

On a side note, I think it's important that the Realtek card be operational in order to make the Wind a viable Apple replacement.

Will we need an official Realtek OSX driver for the RTL8187SE to work, or is it possible to create/modify another driver to get the card working?

Likewise, never used OSX before, but would if it worked out of the box. Thumbs up from me.

Love my Mac so would love to have this on my Wind!

Only problem wouldn't it be illegal to share this so I guess you cant really give people links/torrents to download on this forum..
Although i'm sure talking about it is fine right?

My Wind/4211 at the minute is just a huge playground lol! Installing OS's all over the place to test what I like and don't and what works and don't until I find a setup that I like!

Talking about it is fine. We'll cross that bridge when we need to. ;)

Don't have my Wind yet (Tues, 8 Jul hopefully  ) but has (or is anyone) able to try the WLAN drivers from Realtek's FTP? There's some OS X drivers but obviously I'm not sure they'll work. At any rate I ordered a Dell 1500 Wireless N card which happens to have the same chipset as the Apple Airport Express.
Anyway, here's the link to the ftp:

ftp://210.51.181.211/cn/wlan/

The two files are named:

Realtek_RTL8187_MacOS10.4_Driver_1309_UI1.5.1.zip
Realtek_RTL8187B_MacOS10.4_Driver_1117_UI_1.5.1A.zip

There's also one called Realtek_MacOS10.4_Universal_Driver_1.4.5_UI1.4.7.zip - hard to tell if "universal" means it's like a universal realtek driver, or if it means universal binary, but it might be worth a shot as well.

If we could get a device id for this Realtek WLAN I might be able to get it to work.

Lemme know if anyone knows it

Thanks,

this is from the Linux sub-forum, I'm not sure if the device id is in there though:

The card doesn't seem to send the dhcp request and so doesn't get a connection, the router is definately setup to allow the card to connect. I'm wondering if it's a pci to usb bridge issue. Maybe 10ec:8136 isn't properly supported but then I don't know, I've tried using the windows drivers for the RTL8185B but the card isn't recognized as it's not the B version (I only tried this driver because one of the two ID's from the B card matched our ID for the SE card).

I too have ordered a dell 1500 wireless N card from ebay for 35$ so hopefully that'll fix the crappy wifi distance issue.

Oh well then that sucks.

I'll be able to help with OS X once I get my Wind as well since it was pretty much the main reason why I bought it.

Just chiming in to say you're right sharing links isn't an option here. Talking about how to create an installer disc or what works and what doesn't work is fine.
Requests or offers to share the disc cross the line.

Good luck and have fun :)

This is a great idea.....Really looking forward to a Wind only version with specific kexts for the Wind in place....

I really like ichat and and mail in OSX as most of my family use Macs so if I had this functionality on my Wind it would be awesome, I'm no newbie to OSX on a PC having configured a few machines since the project was launched.....

As long as most things work i.e resolution, and graphics (fully) along with speakers, webcam, bluetooth, mic, I'd be blown away...looks like wifi doesnt work but the old Dell 1390 will come to the rescue again lol....

Looking forward to updates and news on this....I have kalyway 10.5.1....wonder if that would go straight on....

The wlan chipset is an RTL8187SE - limited drivers listed on the realtek site but I emailed them and they sent me the linux drivers, needed to be hacked a little to get them to build but they are working now.

Might be worth one of you os x folks mailing them and seeing what comes back

this is the email address I sent to

wlanfae@realtek.com

I would like to run os x as well - be really cool to show of the box with ubuntu, windows and os x running on it.
