A lot of people have bought a usb-dvd just to install OSX. But if you follow this guide you won't need a usb-dvd,

it's not even necessary to use a usb-stick.

Things you need:

1. A Msi Wind running xp, (you don't need a real mac.)

2. The MSIwindosx86.iso (make your copy legit buy a leopard dvd)

3. partition software (I use partition Magic)

4. Leopard hd install helper http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=af9eb077adf4a3dd67ecdca502755115&act=attach&type=post&id=29565

When you have downloaded all these things, and have

them installed on your wind we are ready to begin.

Partitioning your drive:

1. You delete all partitions Also the recovery partition! (except your windows partition)

2. You create a primary fat32 partition, and label it "OSX"
You decide how much space you are going to give your
osx partition (at least 15 gb).

3. Then you create a logical fat32 partition and label it "install"
(Make this a 4gb partition.)

Now we are going to use the Leopard hd install helper.

4. Open the file called ddmac.exe:
Image

5. Push this button.
Image

6. Find your MSIwindosx86.iso and open it.
Image

7. Choose the partition you labeled "install". Then push the button and wait(ca. 10min.)
Image

8. Your now finished using the Leopard hd install helper.
Image

Reboot and follow my guide on youtube.
Part1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRSb_rnnCgg

Part2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn15NLDRL20

Or follow this text-Guide

9. Reboot then choose "MAC OS X System"

10. Choose "MAC OS X Install DVD Slipstream"

11. Now your in the installer choose english as your language.

12. Click on the Utilities and choose diskutility.

13. Choose the partition you labeled "OSX"

14. Click the erase button and change the format from "MS-DOS"
to "MAC OSX extended (journaled)" and format the partition.

15. Now quit the DiskUtility and go back to the language chooser

16. Then click continue untill you reach the screen where you have to
choose your partition (Choose the partition you labeled "OSX")

17. Before you click install go into Customize and uncheck the kernel.

18. Now click install and wait untill the installer reboots your wind.

19. When you reboot choose the partition labeled "OSX"

20. Now you just follow the steps in the installer.

You shouldn't use this guide unless you know how to reinstall your xp installation if something goes wrong!

Are you getting the HFS+ error or do you want to save your recovery partition?

Things you need:

1.You WILL need a usb-stick if you wish to save your recovery partition (1gb)

2. Unetbootin: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=unetbootin&filename=unetbootin-windows-304.exe&use_mirror=heanet

Making a bootable ubuntu usb

I choose ubuntu because its GUI is fairly easy to use

1. Run the unetbootin software.

2. Choose ubuntu 8.04 live and install it on your usb-stick. "make sure you choose the drive letter of your usb-stick"

Image

Now you have a bootable ubuntu liveusb.

Follow the original guide untill step 9. where you have to reboot.

1.Reboot and at the msi screen press F11 and boot from your usb-stick.

2. Ubuntu will automatically load.

3. When the liveusb has finished loading open gparted

Image

4. Choose your XP partition and click "Manage flags"

Image

5. Choose boot.
Image

6. Shut down Ubuntu.

7. Follow the rest of the original guide from step 9.

Now you have a Wind dualbooting XP and OSX without using a usb-dvd
or a usb-stick. :D

Can you post a text version of the guide from the video? Kinda hard to see what you're doing.

I have written a little text-guide. ;)

PS. I can assure you that this method works. ( I have used it myself about 5 times)

Didn't work for me. :(

Started off fine but when it rebooted following the install completion I got the 'F3...' prompt and then just 'HFS+ partition error'. Something obvious I did wrong? Was I meant to remove the MSI recovery partition? Does it interfere?

Xen I'm sorry that it didn't work. I don't now if it will work if you keep the recovery partition.

Seems to occur when the OSX partition is an odd number, and as the hidden partition occupies 1 it means that OSX is 3... If that makes any sense...

Ah, that would hold true for me.

So if I'd left the recovery partition intact I would have needed to make the install partition first and then the OSX one (so install = 3 and OSX = 4).

Apparently it can be fixed but I'd need to boot off the install DVD (which is a little impossible currently ;)): http://www.micropctalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2660

Quote:
1. Boot off OSX in single user mode (via Jas DVD, pressing F8 and typing -s)
2. At prompt:

fdisk -e/dev/rdisk0
flag 2
update
write
quit
reboot

Remark: Here we are assuming that OSX is in the second partition (=flag 2)

yes, I saw that, but as I have no way of using a DVD drive I am stuck. Currently trying to get bootable XP on a USB stick so I can reset the MBR.... and start all over again.

I am using something called Ultimate Boot CD first. It works on USB & CD, so I hope I can get this done...

Think that might have worked, OSX booting up now.

I booted to linux from an SD card, ran cfdisk, made the XP partition bootable.

I can try. :)

Now, you can't boot off CD/DVD with the Wind right? Have you got a machine you can make a bootable USB or SD card on?

Yes, it's how I am posting now. My wind is as useful as a brick atm. If you have MSN this would be easier haha. Ubuntu is downloading at 2.5mb/s nearly done...

No MSN sorry. If the below doesn't work for you I could look to installing it temporarily.

Okay, once you get into ubuntu start a terminal window up (think it's under System/Preferences from what I recall?)

From the prompt type cfdisk (hopefully Ubuntu has this; I was using BackTrack).

You should get a menu showing your drives/partitions and sizes, etc. It probably says bootable next to the recovery partition (should be first in the list). You want to move that flag to the XP partition (should be second one down).

Left/right changes what command you're using (shown at the bottom), up/down changes the highlighted partition.

Hit return when the recovery partition and the bootable command are selected to remove that flag.

Move down to the XP partition and turn the bootable flag on.

Move your command cursor all the way to the right to the 'write' command. Hit return, type yes.

Reboot.

You should get (this is what I get anyway)...

F3 for the recovery partition
XP partition shows it's boot menu
From there you can select OSX (or XP).

OSX is working fine for me here, XP boots too.
