Micro-Star International (MSI) company chairman Joseph Hsu recently discussed the products the company will be showcasing at Computex 2008, including motherboards and low-cost PCs.

MSI will also launch an Windows XP version of its 10-inch Wind notebook in three different colors, including black, white and pink and will feature two different battery configurations. A six-cell pack will allow the notebook to run for six hours, but the price of the notebook will be around NT$18,900 (US$620), while a notebook with a three-cell battery will be priced around NT$17,900, noted Hsu.

The company will launch a 8.9-inch Wind notebook in July or August and will try to maintain the gross margin of the product line at around 10-15%.

Hsu stated that a shortage of notebook batteries and Intel's Atom processors is each at around 50% and that the shortage will not be resolved until the end of the third quarter of this year.

Not looking good, the price increase for the 6-cell is quite significant. I wonder if this is going to change the prices that are currently being offered for the pre-order in Singapore (it's SGD799 now).

Wasn't that with a SGD30 reduction on the normal price? If so, a rise from 830 to 850 isn't that much...

With the normal 3 cell price being SGD800, the pre-order deal should drop to SGD770

ah... taxes probably make my reasoning invalid.

Those prices seem reasonable to me, you could always look at an 3rd party battery!

Yep, it's 7% more here, which makes it SGD850 by your calculations. Still, USD630 for the 6-cell one is dangerously approaching the price of the Eee PC 901, and people will start to draw comparisons.

You seem to be worried for no reason, all you need to do is watch the temperature of the battery, it is just as likely to blow up as a normal battery is.

It's USD 620 ;)

People will compare anyway. Important aspect being that for USD 620 they get the 6 cell version which should lasts longer than the EEE 901.
Small differences perhaps, but both in the advantage of the Wind ;)

First post will be updated in a min.

And you're right. USD 620 is about 315 in Pounds. Don't forget about taxes and import costs tho :(

Nah, normal batteries have quality checks. There's still a chance they'll blow up, but it's probably lesser.

But the Eee PC 900 is going to be discontinued - general-discussion/more-900-wind-the-new-bestseller-t90.html

Well yes, but they are still being sold in this country, and discontinued does not mean they are taking them off the shelves but just not replenishing stock.
The 901 Is 650USD which again the MSI Wind undercuts.

Before that, the price difference was a lot better: USD549 vs USD650.

Damn. Bad (but expected) news. I really hope the Linux prices will stay closer to the earlier $399. Any news on that?

Let's just wait until the product is launched on 3rd June. By then we will know the actual retail price, and we'll be in a better position to make a purchasing decision.
